Finding affordable manners of gathering statistically meaningful traffic information for traffic management and transport planning is a continuous challenge. Road-side sensors with an efficient, optimized internal Bluetooth scanner and a suitable antenna are one of the most promising newcomers in the ITS market in recent years; the sensor is a low cost ITS solution offering live vehicle tracking sample information.

The Bluetooth® channel is used for data transmission for a limited amount of data; the channel is efficient and cost effective. Bluetooth communication is used by mobile telephones, hands-free sets, GPS navigators and more.
All these Bluetooth® emitting devices have a unique, but anonymous MAC address, which in essence means that they leave a unique digital footprint behind without revealing information about the owner that can put into jeopardy his or her privacy.

As the vehicles circulate the DeepBlue Sensors will pick up these signals and track the path of the vehicles; the MAC address is thereafter automatically encrypted to eliminate any possible trace between a device detected and its owner. With a statistically significant percentage of the passing vehicles providing a Bluetooth® signal the sensors will provide very, very accurate traffic information.

By picking up the same MAC address in multiple sensors one can utilize matching between sensors and effectively calculate the travel time for each segment. The same Bluetooth® road-side sensors are also an important tool for getting valuable data for mobility studies and infrastructure planning; data such as the origin and destination in real time. This allows setting up Origin/Destination matrices.
